It’s been a discussion ever since someone had the brilliant idea of putting an engine in a bicycle: sport bikes versus cruisers and the people who ride them. Cruisers are for 50 year olds with a serious case of midlife crisis, sport bikes are for numbnuts who ride like idiots and are just out to kill themselves – and others. Some even go as far as to refuse greeting ‘the other sort’ when they’re out on the road. Are they really that much different...?
I’m a sport bikes girl all the way, no doubt about that. Not in a million years will you find me on a cruiser. One exception: if I’ll ever ride the Route 66, I’d be willing to do it on a Harley Davidson. Hey, I’m a European girl, so if I’d want to go American, I’d better go all the way, right?
I’ve worked at motorcycles stores, motorcycles touring companies, and in the MotoGP paddock. I think it’s safe to say I’ve met ALL types of riders. You know what? We’re not all that different, especially not the true enthusiasts. We can talk hours about the perfect modifications and finding the right parts. We happily discuss the best countries with the most beautiful roads. When we’re on holiday, we’ll always stop to have a chat with other bikers, making friends as we go.
Most of all, though: we have the same mindset. The biggest reason all of us are crazy about motorcycles, is the sense of freedom we get when we’re out there. Whether there’s a Kawasaki ZX-10 or a Yamaha V-Max between your legs; when the sun is shining and the open road lies ahead of you, life just doesn’t get much better! We’re really not that different.
